CATS AND WOOD STOVE?

Post by soft » Sat, 18 Jan 2003 02:50:07

I am a bit conserned about my Cat Five and our wood stove. All the
cats love it, so I line their beds around it (but not too close that
they would be harmed). They love to nap in these bed during the day
when the fire is going.

The problem is Cat Five. He likes to sneak out of his bed and get
closer to the fire...sometimes he tries to get so close I am afraid he
is going to get burnt or over heated. Miss Thang and Lucifer do not
try to get as close to the wood stove as Cat Five does.

Naturally I keep a close eye on him because of this, but my question
is would a cat let themselves over heat or am I being parinoid? I
don't see how he can stand to get that close to the wood stove. I
would have thought he would be too hot but he seems to love the heat.

thanks

Karryl

As long as there aren't any flying embers which could ignite his fur, he should
be okay. He won't get so close as to burn himself. I myself like super hot
showers and heaters. Everyone has different tolerance levels.

Hi Karryl.

My Shiva's favorite place is right under the woodstove.  I was concerned at
first too but it has not harmed her even though she can sit there very long
and get very hot.  I always wondered how come neither of my two cats ever
had the urge to jump on the stove..  I suppose they have some good instinct
about these dangers.    I think you still better keep a close eye on your
cat, but he can get pretty close without harm.

Our cats seem to instinctively realize that the stove is not for walking
on...although, our oldest boy, Foxy, did jump onto it once (I think he was
in a hurry to get off the chair and just didn't think before he leaped), and
he burned his paws.  Since that occurence, we have always kept a lot of
items on top of the stove, so there isn't a readily accessible place to jump
to.

just 2 cents worth,  I have 4 in the house with a woodstove.  they love it.
they will not let themselves get too hot. Most enjoy laying within 2 feet of
it.  the smallest lays against the back wall of the room where the wall tile
meets the floor tile.  He stays heated from all sides.  They have never gotten
too close to the heat.  They seem to know their limits,  much like laying in
the sunbeam.
