A Cat with a new dog?

Post by Robert Saikal » Fri, 09 Dec 1994 01:59:11

I have a six year old, very unfriendly cat, who will bite and scratch
without notice, even when she is purring.  Rascal has done this since we
brought her home at 8 weeks.  She is very unfriendly when we have company
over, so much so that other people cannot even approach her without being
hissed at, which leads me to believe that she does this out of fear, even
though she has never been abused.  I have heard that this could be due to
her breed (himalayen/alley-cat).  Could this be?
My question is this:  We want to bring a puppy into the familly, but are
scared that Rascal will react badly towards it.  She has been exposed to
dogs, and the reaction was not as bad as we expected, however it was not at
our house (her territory).  Could anybody comment on this?  Also, if they
do happen to get along, how will this affect Rascal mentally, after all she
did receive all our attention for 6 years?

When you do get the puppy, make sure Rascal still gets a lot of
attention and this will relieve her stress. Don't push the two animals
together but let Rascal deal with the newcomer at her own pace. It could
go relatively smoothly or be a disaster for several weeks, be prepared
not to give up easily!
