Can Cats Catch Human Diseases?

Post by Steve Herin » Thu, 04 Apr 1996 04:00:00

My girlfriend has an American Longhair (S***) who is a pretty cool
little guy.  (Neutered male actually.)  Anyway, she's worried that he
can catch her human diseases like a cold or flu.  I don't think this is
possible but if any of you could shed some light on this it would be
appreciated.   I looked through some of the FAQs listed and couldn't
find anything.

Thanks in advance to those who reply.

My kitty, Newton, have often had colds and the flu at the same time.  We
lie in bed together either sneezing, coughing or puking up a storm.  If
we weren't both so miserable it would be quite comical.

Yes, they can, but whenever I've been sick I wasn't in the mood to be
concerned about it. I don't think it's that common, but it is a
possibility.

I posted a while ago about this - I didn't think it was possible, but I was
told that those viruses mutate rapidly and might mutate into a form that
can be transmitted between cats/humans.

All I can say is that my cats never seem to get the flu (of course, they
were vaccinated long ago against the various `kitty flu' ailments), I do
get colds/flu, and never seem to transmit them to the cats. Or catch them
frm the cats, who are almost never ill.
