thyroid and kidney enlargement on 16 year old female Cat

Post by Jan W » Tue, 08 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Suddenly (within 18 days) our Cat (female tabby) changed from
higly active to  slomeness.

After consulting the local vet we noticed that her thyroid and kidneys were
considerable bigger than usual.

At the same time she started to have eye problems wich results in
absents of any iris activity.

For now the cat is treated with penicilin cure.

My question to all of you:

Does anybody recognize those symptons?

If so, can you please reply on this newsgroup or

Thanks too from my cat!

Hi, Jan,

Did your vet check for hyperthyroidism?  I did a little web surfing, and read
that hyperthyroidism will cause an enlarged thyroid, and also increases the
*** supply to the kidneys, though I don't know whether that will actually
enlarge the kidneys.  Here are a couple of web sites on it:

Something that causes enlargement of the kidneys is Polycystic Kidney Disease
(PKD).  I haven't seen anything about it causing enlargement in the thyroid,
but maybe your kitty has multiple problems?  Anyway, here is a web site that
has a whole section of links to information on PKD:

Good luck with your kitty, I hope she gets better soon.  Let us know what you
find out.
